India’s automotive landscape is undergoing a monumental shift, and the biggest winner is the car buyer. The government’s new GST 2.0 framework has triggered sweeping price reductions, making everything from popular hatchbacks to luxury SUVs significantly more affordable. This move, a timely gift ahead of the festive season, is not just a market correction but a strategic simplification of the tax structure, poised to boost consumer spending and revitalize the auto sector.

So, what’s driving this change? The new GST framework replaces the old, complex tax-plus-cess structure with simplified slabs. Small cars (under 4 meters in length with specific engine capacities) now fall under an 18% GST rate, down from the previous 28% plus cess. Meanwhile, larger vehicles, which were previously taxed at up to 50% including a hefty cess, now face a simplified, flat 40% GST. The removal of the unpredictable compensation cess is the key factor driving these price benefits for consumers.

Car manufacturers are embracing this change with gusto, passing on the full benefits to their customers. Companies like Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Toyota, and even luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes-Benz have officially announced price cuts. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India, welcomed the move as a “far-sighted step” that will make personal mobility more affordable, while Anand Mahindra of Mahindra & Mahindra hailed the reforms for their “far-reaching positive impact.”

The price reductions are effective from September 22, but many automakers have already begun accepting bookings at the new, lower rates. The savings are substantial. For instance, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is cheaper by up to ₹1.56 lakh, the Toyota Fortuner sees a massive price drop of ₹3.49 lakh, and the Tata Nexon is now more affordable by up to ₹1.55 lakh. Luxury car buyers can also rejoice, with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class becoming cheaper by a staggering ₹11 lakh. Other models poised to become cheaper include the Tata Punch, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Swift, and Toyota Innova Hycross.
